Applications are now being taken for candidates seeking to secure an apprenticeship in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Apprentice pay 

Apprentice pay is set, year-on-year, as a percentage of the basic skilled engineer's rate of pay, currently £15.07/hr.

Year 1 - 40% ; Year 2 - 50% ; Year 3 - 60% ; Year 4 - 70%.  

Note, Year 1 rate is set at a higher percentage for older apprentices who have a technical background in a similar sector.

After four years the apprenticeship is complete and you become a time-served engineer. 

Year 5 - 80% ; Year 6 - 100%.

Further training in years 5 and 6 is offered to advance your skills and knowledge, making you a first class engineer!

All years of the training require overtime working and paid at x1.5 or x2.

Training Structure

The mechanical engineering advanced apprenticeship is a comprehensive 4 years training program and consists of 4 days/wk practical skills training at Torkingtons and 1 day/wk release at college.

NVQ’s II & III are achieved through practical skills training delivered at Torkingtons, and the BTec National in Mechanical Engineering and HNC in Mechanical or Production Engineering are both achieved through day release at college.

Entry Qualifications

Successful applicants will have a minimum 5 GCSE’s, with grades B or above in Maths and English. Similarly good grades in IT and Science will be an advantage.

Applications are welcome from candidates who are undertaking, or have undertaken A levels, and also from young adults who have decided it's time for a career change. A level subject choice is not critical and applications are welcome from candidates who have selected non-technical subjects at A level.

  • BTec National in Mechanical Engineering - may not required for applicants with A level qualifications
